It’s an honor to have you here, Aida! Starting your music career at the age of 7 is quite remarkable. Can you tell us how you discovered your passion for music at such a young age and what initially drew you to pursue it?
I’ve always been immersed in music. Even at a young age, it sparked profound joy within me. There was nothing more calming than listening to music and nothing more exhilarating than playing and singing. From early on, I was certain about my life’s path. As a child, I would seize every opportunity to perform. I fondly remember setting up chairs in the living room, using a pencil as a makeshift microphone, and insistently inviting my family “to come to my show.” The rest, as they say, is history. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found my passion and purpose at such a young age. This early discovery has granted me ample time to explore every facet of music and to evolve into the artist and musician I am today.
The Norwegian Opera House is an esteemed venue. Could you share your experience of performing there and how it shaped your aspirations as a young musician?
The experience was phenomenal! Of course, it required immense hard work and discipline, which isn’t always straightforward when you’re very young. But witnessing the final product after months of rehearsals – seeing the progression from small rehearsal rooms to sets and then to a massive stage filled with an eager audience – it’s truly magical. This journey undeniably established a solid foundation for me regarding work ethic and discipline in my musicianship. The belief in persevering, in putting in the work no matter the circumstances, can yield extraordinary outcomes and ultimately, awe-inspiring musical experiences for everyone, both on- and off-stage.
Being part of the TV show “Barnas Superjul” is a significant accomplishment. Can you describe your role in the show and how it impacted your musical journey?
As one of the lead singers for virtually every episode, I would spend two full days shooting videos for each episode, plus an additional 1–2 days in recording sessions. It was an exhilarating time of my life, where I had the opportunity to sing, dance, act, and utilize multiple facets of music and entertainment for months on end. The opportunities for creative expression were boundless. However, the hours were long, and Norway, not known for its balmy weather, often provided us with long days of frozen feet and toes.
The work demanded a high degree of focus, patience, and stamina. Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything in the world. It catalyzed my growth immensely, particularly as a performer, and I carry many of those life lessons into my current artistry. It was a formative period that clearly demonstrated what the industry demands and how vital it is for a creative individual to have a versatile repertoire.
The music from “Barnas Superjul” achieved platinum status and was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy. How did it feel to be part of such a successful project at a young age, and how did that experience influence your artistic development?
The experience was truly remarkable! Being seated among some of the most brilliant minds in the Norwegian music scene at such a young age is indescribable. My love for music and my artistry is immeasurable, and I have always invested considerable care and time into it, even as a child. To have my dedication validated on such a large scale is an incredibly humbling and unparalleled feeling. It naturally intensifies the drive and motivation intrinsic to my roles as an artist and writer. Furthermore, it enhances the genuine love, passion, and care I imbue into everything I undertake musically.
As a young artist, you were involved in the music video portions of each episode of “Barnas Superjul.” How did that opportunity contribute to your growth as a performer and help shape your understanding of the visual elements in music?
There’s no denying the importance of the visual elements in music. Pairing great visuals with music amplifies the artistry and the message you’re trying to convey. I had numerous opportunities to direct and collaborate with directors on the imagery and narratives in the music videos, helping the songs truly blossom. Developing an eye for the visual aspects of music is crucial for artists in this era, and I was fortunate to jumpstart that development early on.
While it was challenging initially, it now feels far more intuitive to envision the visual direction for anything I undertake. Whether it’s a live performance with a full band, song releases, or promotional materials for both, it has encouraged me to always consider the “bigger picture” as a performer.
Can you share how the success of “Barnas Superjul” impacted your early career and opened doors for further opportunities?
This experience really served as a launching pad for me, facilitating regular gigs and enabling me to perform in venues like John Dee and Sentrum Scene as early as my teens. When you dedicate countless hours to refining your craft and talent and consistently show up for all opportunities that come your way, word certainly gets around.
After gigging extensively, it led to a snowball effect, resulting in more vocal work for different bands, recordings, studio sessions, and writing camps in studios like Urban Sound Studios. It also allowed me to perform at major events, such as the 200-year anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution on live television before the Royal family and Nordic parliaments, and participate in TV specials like “Decembertoner” on the second largest TV channel in Norway. The list really goes on. I’m endlessly grateful for these experiences.
Transitioning from early TV appearances to pursuing a career in music, what were some challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them to continue growing as an artist?
For me, it was crucial to contribute something unique and special to the music scene, something that was authentically mine. This motivation is what shaped me into being not just a performer, but also a songwriter and an artist. I wanted any performances and music releases following my TV appearances to be on my terms, rather than simply delivering covers or highly commercial content, which is often the norm in TV entertainment.
This pursuit has led me to full autonomy over my artistic project, allowing me to craft my own sound and my unique approach to blending powerful vocals and engaging live shows with profound storytelling that genuinely touches people’s hearts. So far, I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Being able to use my years of diverse musical and performance experience to shape my own style has undoubtedly been the most challenging yet unquestionably the most rewarding aspect of my journey.
Looking back at your early experiences, how do you think they have shaped your musical style and artistic identity today? Are there any particular lessons or values that you carry with you from those formative years?
Undoubtedly, the performer and artist I am today is profoundly influenced by the fearless and determined younger version of myself. My present artistry centers around the courage to claim space, to unapologetically be myself and pursue my passion, regardless of others’ opinions. My art is loud and proud, and although asserting myself as a queer female adult undoubtedly presents its own set of challenges, I find strength when I revisit my past.
Whenever I’m in doubt, I “check in” with my younger self and derive immense strength, motivation, and bravery from remembering how she unhesitatingly chased her dreams. From her, I’ve learned lessons of discipline, work ethic, and determination, but above all, I’ve carried forward an intense love and passion for what I do.
