It’s great to have you here, Maida. Your work has garnered international attention, particularly with prestigious features in renowned magazines. Tell us, how does it feel to have your artistry acknowledged on a global scale?
I still find myself processing it sometimes, as it’s a lot to take in. However, I am incredibly grateful, and it’s a reflection of how far I’ve come in my career. It ignites my passion to persevere, innovate, and continually inspire others through these achievements.
Being recognized by Oprah Magazine is no small feat. Can you walk us through the process of creating the “top outstanding do-it-yourself look” that garnered this acclaim?
I have a passion for creating a wide variety of looks, but my favorites are special FX and Halloween themes. The feature in question was Halloween-centric, and I showcased a unique take on Cruella D’Ville. One half of my face was adorned with dalmatian spots, while the other half featured animated beauty makeup. I incorporated a touch of F, blending my three favorite makeup styles together. This look let me craft a hybrid rendition of the movie character, truly bringing it to life.
You’ve been showcased in various international publications, each with its unique audience. How do you ensure that your work resonates with diverse readers across different cultural contexts?
I always prioritize showcasing diversity in my portfolio. In North America, which boasts a highly diverse population, it’s essential for a successful makeup artist to understand and represent that diversity. By ensuring a broad range of looks and styles, my work demonstrates not only my skill set but also inclusivity. There’s no room for limitations or exclusivity in what I do. This approach helps viewers from all backgrounds feel seen, included, and a sense of belonging.
The beauty industry is ever-evolving, with trends changing rapidly across different regions. How do you stay updated and ensure your work remains relevant to international audiences?
Staying attuned to current trends is crucial for a makeup artist, especially in an era where makeup is continually evolving. Thanks to social media, we now have global access to the latest techniques and styles. I consider myself fortunate to be in North America, a hotspot for emerging beauty trends. When I create something new and relevant here, it’s an advantage. I often observe my international audience catching on, especially when something goes viral. Seeing artists from places like India recreate my looks and tag me on Instagram as their inspiration is thrilling. It fuels my passion and keeps me driven.
Have international features and collaborations influenced your makeup style or techniques in any way, given the diverse beauty standards worldwide?
I once had the distinct pleasure of learning specific lipstick application techniques from a Japanese artist. This knowledge has since become a cornerstone of my makeup routine. I’ve incorporated this technique with my signature methods, especially when instructing my international clients. The impact on their makeup application has been substantial. The beauty industry has witnessed significant growth in terms of diversity. The inclusivity we see in today’s makeup brands is commendable. To evolve and remain relevant, it’s vital to embrace and influence the multifaceted nature of contemporary beauty.
Many makeup artists aspire to gain international recognition. What advice would you offer them based on your journey from local projects to international acclaim?
Love what you do and continue to invest in honing your craft. No matter your years of experience or depth of knowledge in the industry, there’s always more to learn. This is what I cherish most about being a makeup artist: the learning is ceaseless. Everyone has something valuable to offer, including you. Embrace new knowledge, share it, and witness your own growth.
After being spotlighted by Oprah Magazine, did you notice a shift in how clients or peers perceived you? How did this recognition shape the subsequent chapters of your career?
Yes, the increased attention significantly shifted my trajectory in the industry. While I initially focused more on beauty and fashion, I now find myself drawn to film, TV, and special FX. I’ve always been open to all areas of makeup, but over the years, beauty and fashion dominated my schedule. This recent opportunity rekindled my passion for every facet of my profession, reminding me of my love for every aspect equally.
With such esteemed international accolades already under your belt, what’s next for you? Are there other global platforms or publications you’re aiming to collaborate with?
Absolutely! This renewed drive has fueled my aspirations to collaborate with Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar to showcase the fashion and beauty side of my artistry. On the film and TV front, I’m eager to contribute to a Netflix series or a major motion picture. Ultimately, aiming for an Oscar for Best Makeup is certainly on my radar. Every step I’ve taken in my career has been a stepping stone leading me to that dream. I’m truly excited for what the future holds!
