I’ve had the privilege of performing with renowned ensembles like the Corcovado Orchestra in Germany (2017) and Camerata Laranjeiras in Norway (2018). These opportunities not only introduced me to the depths of Norwegian and German folk music but also kindled a deep love for Scandinavian pop and classical melodies. Collaborating with accomplished musicians from these regions instilled in me a sense of discipline and dedication. Their mastery inspired me to strive for excellence, continuously honing my cello techniques.
A standout experience was the 2019 Stripped Down Tour with Astrid S. It opened my eyes to the innovative possibilities of integrating strings into contemporary pop. My international sojourns have also inspired me to experiment with a blend of sounds, marrying folk influences with my classical foundation. This synthesis has enabled me to employ groundbreaking techniques, forging a distinct musical voice that seamlessly marries tradition with innovation.

Your musical journey has taken you to Europe, North America, and beyond. How have these cultural encounters influenced your approach to the cello and music in general?
Embarking on a global musical experience has profoundly transformed my relationship with the cello and reshaped my understanding of music. Collaborating with Astrid S and her ensemble was undoubtedly a pivotal experience. Being in the company of Norway’s premier musicians, I was deeply inspired by their meticulous workflow and creative setups, which ignited a curiosity within me. This inquisitiveness spurred me to explore new equipment and reimagine my live cello performances.
As I journeyed from one locale to another, I observed diverse musical traditions and the unique ways in which different cultures embrace the cello. Drawing parallels between ancient folk legacies and their modern interpretations has offered me a comprehensive view of music’s evolution.
A profound realization dawned upon me during these intercultural interactions. I consciously broadened my musical scope, infusing new dimensions into my cello renditions and compositions. Those moments truly resonate deep within me. During the Astrid S tour, the feeling was nothing short of awe-inspiring as I set foot on the stage, gazing out at a vast expanse of eager faces. The overwhelming show of support and the flurry of autograph requests afterward were deeply touching. The experience of forging a connection with such a vast and grateful audience was almost surreal. Every interaction from that tour amplified my gratitude for being part of such a remarkable journey.
As for the Hadestown National tour, conducting the show for the first time remains an unparalleled memory. A whirlwind of nerves and exhilaration gripped me, but the warmth and encouragement that cascaded from the cast and band members melted away my anxieties. Watching the performance unfold with such seamless artistry instilled in me a joy that’s challenging to encapsulate in mere words. The very thought of that moment invariably paints a smile on my face.

What challenges have you faced while performing internationally, and how have these experiences impacted your professional growth?
Language barriers have certainly led to some intriguing moments on stage. There were times I was at the forefront of performances and couldn’t shake off a hint of self-consciousness due to my Brazilian heritage. Yet, I’ve been consistently met with warm, supportive audiences that dispel any lingering doubts. And I can’t underscore enough the kinship I felt with fellow musicians who always rallied around me; their camaraderie turned those language challenges into mere hitches on the road.
But it’s not just about language – there are unexpected technical hiccups to navigate as well. Believe it or not, equipment and communication glitches are all part and parcel of the journey. I recall an episode with a jazz ensemble at a prestigious, age-old jazz venue. We’d meticulously planned our performance, but to our surprise, the venue was locked up when we arrived! The situation was far from ideal – there we were, ahead of both the sound technician and the venue’s manager. But instead of succumbing to frustration, my bandmates and I leaned into the humor of it all. Prioritizing our collective spirit, we ensured the show still resonated with the audience.
Journeying across different venues and engaging with varied audiences has been an enlightening experience. I’ve gleaned that not every hiccup warrants a dent in my morale. My north star is to consistently deliver my best and curate an enriching experience for the audience. This mindset has been pivotal in not only preserving my positivity but also catalyzing my professional evolution. It’s akin to discovering my unique rhythm – when the bond with the audience is robust and the music resonates, everything else seamlessly aligns.

How has your Brazilian heritage been received internationally, and how do you incorporate it into your performances?
My Brazilian heritage has been a source of joy and inspiration in my international performances. There seems to be a genuine appreciation from audiences for the intricate rhythms and distinctive elements I infuse into my cello pieces. It’s incredibly uplifting to witness the resonance of these unique musical flavors, which seem to captivate listeners everywhere.

A standout moment was teaming up with the supremely gifted Norwegian jazz singer, Marit Sandvik. Our shared passion for Brazilian tunes infused our performance with a distinctive charm. Marit’s rhythmic prowess was a joy to behold, and my cello chords harmoniously complemented her groove. The crowning touch? She masterfully wielded a shaker as she sang, crafting a rhythmically rich tapestry.
This collaboration was a pivotal moment in my musical odyssey. The intimate duo setting thrust my cello prowess into the spotlight, and the outcome was immensely gratifying. It broadened my horizons, sparking a desire to delve deeper into diverse collaborations and artistic expressions.

Recently, I’ve found myself entranced by the complex rhythms of African music, which echo the pulsating heartbeat of Brazilian tunes. Their rhythmic intricacies and innovative percussion techniques are nothing short of captivating.
