Early life and Career Information
Christina Aguilera was born to Shelly Loraine Kearns and Fausto Xavier Aguilera on the 18th of December 1980 in Staten Island, New York City. Her father was a soldier in the US Army, while her mother was a pianist and violinist. By nature of her father’s job, Aguilera moved around frequently before settling in Rochester, a Pittsburgh suburb, following her parents’ divorce when she was six.
Christina sought music to escape from her father’s physically and emotionally abusive behavior toward her and her mother. As a child, she sang a lot, which earned her the nickname “the little girl with the big voice” in her neighborhood.
In 1991, Christina took part in a TV talent show called “Star Search.” Although she was eliminated in the semi-finals, it helped her secure a role on The Mickey Mouse Club in 1993. When the show got canceled in 1994, Christina moved to Japan to record her first song, “All I Wanna Do,” with Japanese singer Keizo Nakanishi.
In 1998, Christina returned to the US to seek a recording contract. After submitting her performance of Whitney Houston’s “Run to You,” she was chosen by Disney to sing “Reflection,” the title song for the animated film “Mulan.”
The track “Genie in a Bottle,” released in June 1999 and reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, catapulted Aguilera to fame. Her self-titled debut album was released in August 1999 and reached number one on the US Billboard 200. It has eight platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and had sold 17 million copies worldwide as of 2010.
She followed up with two more studio albums in September and October 2000, “Mi Reflejo” and the festive album “My Kind of Christmas.” In 2001, “Mi Reflejo” took home the Best Female Pop Vocal Album award at the 2nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards. In February 2000, Aguilera won Best New Artist at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards.
With a version of Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” a 2001 collaboration with Pink, Mya, and Lil Kim, Aguilera took her first steps toward artistic control. It went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
On her fourth studio album, “Stripped” (2002), Aguilera served as executive producer and co-writer for most tracks. During the marketing for “Stripped,” Aguilera debuted her “Xtina” alter ego.
With her fifth studio album, “Back to Basics,” released in 2006, Aguilera went blonde again, adopting a throwback appearance inspired by Classic Hollywood style icons such as Marilyn Monroe and dubbed her new character “Baby Jane.” From November 2006 to October 2008, she grossed $48.1 million on her “Back to Basics Tour.”
Her subsequent albums “Bionic” (2010) and “Lotus” (2012) garnered mixed reviews, but her 2018 album “Liberation” earned positive reviews and debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.
Aguilera has also found success as an actress in addition to her music career. She co-starred in the 2010 picture “Burlesque,” which garnered $90 million at the box office and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She’s also done voice work for the film “The Emoji Movie” (2017).
